If you and your friends could choose one new class to add to the curriculum, what would it be? Think of what would most help you in your daily life or what would prepare you for life after graduation. What kind of assignments would be required, and how would the class benefit students?
OBVIOUS!
I would add a Shakespeare class. All Shakespeare, all the time.
It might not offer applicable lessons that directly relate to life after graduation, but Shakespeare’s use of language and understanding of the human experience can only enhance a well-rounded education.
Indirectly, Shakespeare’s plays (and sonnets) can affect how a person thinks; for example, I know I would never kill myself if my boyfriend does, because I saw that happen in Romeo and Juliet, and I thought it was a dumb decision. I read how Richard III’s avarice led to his downfall, and how an unhealthy obsession with my mother’s love life could cause me to have visions and alienate–and eventually kill–everybody who loves me, just like Hamlet did. Troilus and Cressida showed me what kind of mother NOT to be, and Twelfth Night gave me awesome ideas for how to pull pranks on a pompous servant.
And that is just scratching the surface! Think how much more I could teach/learn if I read Shakespeare for a whole year! The school would not be big enough for my knowledge!

I would add a cardiothoracic’s class. This class would enable students to learn about the thoracic cavity doing hands on activities. In order to be in this class people would have to take a basic test on the anatomy of the heart and if they do well then they could get in. The students in this class will be learnig and doing surgeries in the thoracic cavity(on cadavers ofcourse.) This class would benefit anyone who is interested in a career in cardio.

Well of course.
You’ll have plenty of that in med school, I’m sure. But don’t discount the biology classes that are available now (I forget their titles … Advanced Biology? Biology II?). A long time ago, my biology class dissected a bunch of stuff: fish (including their hearts), frogs, sheep eyeballs, cow stomachs. It was pretty interesting, if a bit gross.

I would add what I would call a S.I.C.(String Instrument Class) because the school band does not include string instruments. I would accept anybody who is interested in learning how to play basic string instruments such as the bass guitar and the electric guitar. I would also add an advanced class that will be learning very complex chords and also learn to play different types of guitars like a 12-string electric or a 6-string bass. the advanced class will not only be for learning how to play instruments, we would also study famous artists who played string instruments such as Eddie Van Halen or Jimi Hendrix.
Ms. Vincent says:
The closest I have seen to this type of class is Orchestra, which incorporates stringed instruments that are not the guitar (sorry). And of course, that was not at this school.
I think this sounds like a good idea for a club, though. You should look into that.

Too bad Choir already exists!
If it was up to me for a NEW class, it would be…something like philosphy. I think it would be more fun to learn some ideas and not just facts.
(whatever)
Or class that would help us compose music. That’d be fun.
Ms. Vincent says:
I believe Mr. D. VanNeste would love to teach a philosophy class. He is very interested in that.

If I had to design a new class in school I would design a class that would further prepare students for the real world. It would show them what is to come when they graduate. It would better prepare them for the bills and tasks that an adult will need to perform. This would also be an awakening for some students who think life after school is a breeze. Also the class would help guide the students in the right direction for what they might need to work on for them to suceed after high school.
Ms. Vincent says:
I’m trying to think of whether we have a class like this now. I think many classes have elements; you learn how to balance a checkbook in a business class, for example.
All I’m coming up with is a program called Scared Straight, which is supposed to show bad kids that prison is awful.

I would have a class for personal hygiene. Obviously, some people in this school don’ t know what it is. Deodorant… what’s that? It would really help them in the future for many things. Examples: job interview, communication with people, not making your dog run away. This class would also teach how to dress for certain occasions.
Ms. Vincent says:
This entry makes me laugh!

I would want a foreign class of German. I don’t know any school around here that does. Throughout much of history, people of Germany have contributed to most of the arts, sciences, and mathematics we use today. In the class, not only would we learn the language, but we would learn history, sciences, and geography of the country. Germany has a very colorful history of different findings and events.
Though this may not immeadeatly effect the students straight out of high school, but it will later. Who knows, you may take a trip to Germany and not have to pay for a translator. You may have a german boss and speak german with him and get a raise. Or another conspirator, who has studied Adolf Hitler’s accomplishments, strategies, flaws, and defeats, may rise to power, create a massive army and succeed in doing what Hitler could not, taking over the world. Then the language of German would come in handy by pretending to be German and not being thrown into concentration camps and being tortured with the Barney theme song or some of Metallica’s worse music, or both.

I want a Forensic Science class, because I am very interested in this topic. I believe this would help those students, like myself, who considering this as a future career, to be a CSI. It would help introduce the basics to see whether or not you would consider such a job. It would also help you to develop the quick thinking skills that many CSIs have and teach you just what it is like to solve crimes.
Ms. Vincent says:
I believe Brighton has this class. Is there a way you can go there for one class to take it? You should look into that.

For me it would be a time management class. I know I need it because if i have problems managing time now I’ll defitly need it in the future.

Hm… I am not sure on this one. But maybe a Hebrew language class. I don’t know, I have always wanted to learn the language of my people but haven’t had the chance. Sure I know a few prayers but that’s it. I just want to be able to speak Hebrew well enough to go back to the home land and be able to talk to people.
Ms. Vincent says:
Even though MHS doesn’t offer this class, I still totally think you should find a synagogue or community center that has Hebrew classes. Memphis has a big Jewish community; somebody, somewhere, will know how to hook you up.

If I could add any class in the curriculum it would be a Latin class. I just have always been interested in learning the ‘Dead Language’. As for practical use, it would make more of the students intellegent and the ability to get into better schools for being bilanguil. It would also allow anyone who is interested to be an archeologist, I’m pretty sure you may be able to find some ruins and books with SOMETHING written in latin. I just really really want to learn latin.
(( Oh and there is a class that teaches you how to write checks and pay bills and stuff, Principles of Business.))
