A litter problem has developed on your school’s campus. Students are throwing trash on the ground, leaving empty soda cans and bottles outside on benches, and dropping napkins and other trash on the cafeteria floor rather than carrying them to the trash can. Your principal has asked students to take more care, but the litter problem persists. The principal has reacted by canceling all after-school activities until the problem is taken care of. What is your position on this issue?
Remember, you not only have to tell HOW you feel about the issue, but you also have to tell WHY.

I think that is a good punishment. I mean if your students treat the school like crap and throw their trash all over the place, they need some consequences. I’m sure you have heard, “Afterschool activities are a privilege, not a right”. They may be like that at their house, but most of them are mature enough (hopefully) to take responsibility and find a trashcan. Although the principal could put more trash cans to make a little easier, because we all know they are probably doing it because of their lazyness. Other than that, I completely agree with the principal.

I believe that the principal should not cancel every after-school activity after school for everyone because not every student is trashing up the school. All that would do is try to get those who did not leave trash to peer pressure those who do and I despise that. What he should do is either charge a ten dollar fine on every piece of trash they see you leave(after a warning) or write them up. In my experience, peer pressure never works, it just makes it worse for everyone else.

You know what I’d like to know, what happened to the concept of janitors ACTUALLY WORKING. It seems every time I turn around, someone is complaining about the trash. They need to suck it up because I do not come to school to help someone with their job. Let them do it. There is not even that much trash on the ground. I don’t really care about the after school program thing, I just care about laziness.

I believe that the punishment is too harsh. It’s not like everyone litters. I know that everyone has probably done it before, but not everyone does. People should pick up after themselves. It’s kind of like personal hygiene. People don’t like to live in littered houses (if you do than that is scary, but your business) and they shouldn’t want to live in a littered environment. To fix the problem I would propose more garbage cans and penalties for those caught littering. Those people caught should stay ater school and pick up garbage.

I believe that the principal was wrong to cancel every after-school activity. Not every student is littering. Why should everyone be penalized for other peoples lazy stupidity. The principal only needs to punish those who are caught actually littering.

It is not fair because there emoployees who get paid to clean those types of messes i can understand the principle punishing the students but the correct way to exact a punishment would be to stop the selling of such items that cause the students to litter. Although my classmates have made some very good points corrections could be add you can not penalize every student that litters one because to many students do it this will only cause more problems another is that how would the principal react to other faculity littering it is not a “well rounded circle” this leaves to many holes in a sail boat. Also bravo to the first sentence in James’s persuasion “You know what I’d like to know, what happened to the concept of janitors ACTUALLY WORKING.”- Once again these people get paid for this.

Well thats not fair if I got in trouble I would defintely give my principal a piece of my mine and if are after-school activities were cancelled I wouldnt go to that school anymore. I know its not right to litter but someone shouldnt get that mad over a subject like that unless they’re a neat freak then I could understand why they would get so mad. If my principal got that mad which I dont think he would me and him would defintely have some problems.

I think this a good punishment. Because the school sets up these program the students sould have the decencie to keep the school clean because other people have to go there to and the school isn’t a trash can or their house. These litterers shouldn’t be aloud to have these priphlages if they don’t take care of the school.

I think it is a fair consequence, but I really don’t care because I don’t do any after school activities.

Cancelling all after school activities may be harsh, but if that’s what it takes to make students pay attention to how the litter situation has gotten out of control, that may be necessary. True, students who haven’t been littering will have to pay the consequences, but since there is no way to track who litters and who doesn’t (unless the school actually watches the surveillence cameras) it will have to do. Students should take pride in their school or at least learn to get off their lazy butts and use the trash cans.

I think that suspending all the after school activities is a bit much. Wherever there is kids there will be litter. Even though that might have been all he can do i yhink it was a little extreme maybe when he sees someone littering he should make them clean a whole classroom or something.

I dont care to because we got a new coach.

I don’t like the idea of stopping all after school activities because of a litter problem. The reasoning being not everyone is causing the problem. Instead of canceling after school activities they should bring in an incentive to pick up after yourself and for those really lazy slobs too. Punishing people will only do so much to help, you will still have plenty of people being lazy and not caring because the punishment didn’t apply to them.

It would be a good punishment. I personally have no biased opinion on the subject because I don’t have any after school activities that I participate in. Some might argue that there is a janitor that is payed to clean up the school, yes thereis but doesn’t mean you can be a slob and through your trash on the floors. This would be a fair punishment because the people that didn’t make a mess would get onto the people making the messes and tell them to pick up after themselves.

I am totally against littering the earth. Lets just say I hug trees literally. But why do you have to punish ALL of the population of the school when not everyone has done something. You could do something else ridiculous though. Such as if you see a kid throw trash on the floor on purpose then give them a write off or something else stupid. But then again things such as write offs and d-halls don’t always work on kids and just make them angry and make them want to junk things up more. But that is what I would purpose.

i really dont care to much, because of i have no reason to stay after school
February 25th, 2008 at 9:25 am
No becaues it is good so peolpe can get more work done after school.
February 25th, 2008 at 6:13 pm
It would be a fair punishment. The people littering the school would realize the consequences of their actions and thus change their ways. This punishmnet would affect the students who weren’t littering and they in return would get on to the people littering and tell them to pick up after themselves.Eventually, the problem would be fixed and the students would be more aware of the consequences of their actions.

I believe it is a fair consequence. The students should learn to keep their environment a clean one. If they fail to do so, then they must pay the consequences.
